Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss. Castor oil has antibacterial and anti fungal properties which make it beneficial against follliculitus, dandruff and scalp infections. Its ricinoleic acid content helps increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.
Ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products. The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother and less frizzy.
Small amounts of castor oil can be used for an all-over treatment. More does not always mean better in this case. (See Below about eyelash growth)
How to Use:
Use 1-2x per week. Use on damp hair. Massage the oil onto desired areas of the scalp. Leave the oil in for a minimum of 15-20 minutes. For maximum benefit, leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on clothing, furniture or a pillow.
How to Remove the Oil:
Removing the castor oil can be difficult. Using a small amount of oil and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil absorbing into the hair and scalp. This makes cleanup a lot easier.
An alternate way is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to the hair.
Condition your hair before getting in the shower, massage the conditioner into the scalp to help remove the castor oil. Then, shampoo as usual. Repeat if necessary.
Castor oil is great for thickening eyelashes. It helps in preventing breakage and can also trigger eyelash growth. Castor oil may also be used to thicken eyebrows.
How to Use:
Clean your eye area and make sure all traces of makeup are removed before application. Next take a clean eyeliner brush or mascara wand and slowly dip into the castor oil. Now with the help of that brush/ wand gently apply to your lashes. The best time to apply castor oil is at night, preferably a couple of hours before bed time. While it is perfectly fine to use during the day time, there is a big advantage to applying them at night. This allows more time for the oil to saturate and start the process which aids in growing eyelashes. In the morning use a makeup remover or water to remove the oil from your lashes. Make sure to be gentle when removing the oil try not to pull or rub on you eyelashes.
Care must be taken so as to avoid getting castor oil in contact with the eyes and in case it happens, you must wash your eyes immediately as this may cause extreme irritations.
